How to network and meet business connections in Dubai

If you don’t like how the table is set, turn over the table.
— Frank Underwood

This quote was uttered by Frank Underwood in House of Cards TV series (brilliant show). It has become one of my favorite business quotes too - you have the power to change a situation or a set of circumstances that’s not working for you / that you might not like.

Which is essentially what I’m attempting to do with my Sushi Networking dinners - creating an opportunity for entrepreneurs and business founders to network and make business connections in Dubai (and now in Ras Al Khaimah too). These type of intimate, exclusive, and thoughtfully curated networking dinners are lacking in the UAE region and that’s a problem. Startup founders need other startup founders. Building a business is tough (and lonely). Startup founders can benefit hugely by surrounding themselves with other founders, connecting, sharing, and contributing to the startup ecosystem here in the UAE and beyond.

I launched my own business at the beginning of 2012 in Cape Town (followed by Dubai in 2014) and found a lack of networking events where quality people were carefully chosen. I wanted people to speak about their work, startups, businesses, and how they needed leads/ideas/connections. There are so few Dubai networking events where you could truly connect with someone - it’s usually a business breakfast with 100 people or so. I didn’t like how the table was set - so I launched Sushi Networking. First in Cape Town, then in Dubai & London - connecting startup founders, business owners, and entrepreneurs over sushi and sashimi.
